Our History

The story of LES FILLES DE LA PLUIE is closely tied to Brest, a city shaped by the sea, the wind, and of course, the rain. Just as the climate here teaches resilience and openness, our association was born out of a spirit of perseverance and creativity.

The Beginning

The origins of our association can be traced back to informal gatherings of artists and theater enthusiasts who wanted to create together without being constrained by traditional structures. From those first encounters grew the desire to establish a collective where everyone’s ideas could be heard and where the creative process would be shared.

In 2009, this vision took form as LES FILLES DE LA PLUIE. The name was chosen to reflect both our geographical identity and our philosophy. Rain, often perceived as grey or monotonous, is in fact life-giving, unifying, and transformative. In the same way, we wanted to take what might seem ordinary and reveal its richness through theater.

Early Years

During the first years, our work focused on small-scale productions, workshops, and community events. These modest beginnings were crucial in shaping our identity. We learned the importance of adaptability, of working with limited resources, and of creating art that resonated directly with our local community.

These experiences also taught us that theater could flourish outside of traditional stages. Performances in community halls, schools, and open spaces became opportunities to reach diverse audiences and to establish ourselves as an association with a strong social and cultural commitment.

Growth and Expansion

As the years went by, LES FILLES DE LA PLUIE grew in scope and ambition. We began collaborating with other cultural organizations, developing more elaborate productions, and organizing workshops that attracted participants from different backgrounds. Our collective expanded, bringing in new talents and perspectives that enriched our projects.

We also deepened our ties with Brest’s cultural landscape. Participating in festivals, partnering with local institutions, and engaging with schools became essential parts of our work. These connections helped us grow not only artistically but also as a recognized part of the city’s cultural fabric.

Our Present

Today, LES FILLES DE LA PLUIE stands as a vibrant collective dedicated to innovative theater. While we remain rooted in our community, our outlook is broader, open to national and international exchanges. Our productions combine artistic exploration with social relevance, and our workshops continue to provide opportunities for expression, creativity, and learning.

We are proud of how far we have come, but our history is not a finished story. Every project we undertake adds a new chapter, and every person who joins us—whether as an artist, a participant, or a spectator—becomes part of our ongoing narrative.

A Story Still Being Written

The history of LES FILLES DE LA PLUIE is not one of grand beginnings or spectacular transformations. It is a history of steady growth, collective effort, and enduring belief in the power of theater. It is also a history deeply tied to Brest, a city whose cultural resilience mirrors our own journey.

As we look to the future, we see our history not as something behind us but as a living foundation on which to build. Our past inspires us, our present challenges us, and our future awaits new chapters that will be written together.
